Marybank Farm Pond Expansion 25-26

2nd June, 2026

At Marybank Farm near Logiealmond, recent work has focused on improving an existing pond to make it a much better habitat. Support from the PKC Nature Restoration Fund has specifically helped to deliver the enlargement of the north-west pond and improvements to the island within it.

It might sound like a small change, but it’s the kind of work that can make a real difference. By expanding the pond, more shallow edges and varied water depths are created - exactly the kind of conditions that different species need.

Larger ponds tend to support more life, from aquatic insects to amphibians and birds, simply because they offer more space and a greater mix of habitats. The island at the centre has also been made bigger, giving wildlife a bit of a safer place to rest, feed or nest. In a landscape where predators can easily access open edges, having that extra refuge can really matter, especially for birds and amphibians.

There’s also a wider benefit that goes beyond biodiversity. The enlarged pond now has a greater capacity to hold water, which helps slow down how quickly it moves through the landscape during heavy rainfall. In areas like this, where water levels can rise quickly after wet weather, features like ponds can play a useful role in reducing runoff and easing pressure on nearby burns and downstream areas.
